Beschreibung
The plot of the novel Libido by Belarusian writer Ilya Sin (*1978) takes place in an unspecified post-Soviet city during a time of war conflict, inspired by the war in eastern Ukraine that has been ongoing since 2014. A former sex worker named Marie moves to the city, where her former profession is threatened by the latest technologies that increasingly alienate people from the last remnants of humanity within them. Marie dreams of meeting a beloved man ('the Other') and starting her life from scratch, but the demons of her past and the everyday horrors of the present constantly prevent her from doing so. Is it even possible to find a way out of despair, apathy, and pervasive destruction? In 2019, the novel was awarded the prestigious Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Prize for the best prose book of the year, with the formulation 'for the conceptual embodiment of contemporary perceptions of the world and effective use of experimental writing techniques.'
