The collective monograph with the evocative title Slavic Sketchbook contemplates the symbolism of space and cultural landscape in the concretization of Slavic communities in Central and Eastern Europe. The book is conceived with an awareness of numerous risks and possible pitfalls as a collection of metaphorically conceived sheets, pages, or essayistically captured testimonies, where each included study represents an example of the variously illustrated relationship between humans and their surrounding environment. Thus, a sketchbook emerges, whose genre definition is naturally variable; nevertheless, the effort to understand the landscape in both literal and metaphorical senses is a constantly apparent binding element of the present publication. The individual sheets of our sketchbook are described by reflections connecting the poetics of words, images, and ideas with which the people of Central and Eastern Europe perceived metalinguistic communication not only of urban landscapes, specific places, or their transferred meanings.
