Beschreibung
The book Polynesia concludes the publication of the literary legacy of Czech translator Václav Černý. The volume Hawaii: History, Myths, Poetry was published in 2019, followed by the volume Maori: Society, Culture, and Language a year later. Václav Černý focused primarily on translations from Georgian, but he also dedicated much time to studying Polynesian languages and traditional folklore on the Polynesian islands. However, most of his works remained in manuscripts. The publication Polynesia offers not only dictionaries compiled by Černý (Samoan, Melanesian Tok Pisin, and dictionaries of the islands of Niue and Rapa Nui) but also shorter texts, such as proverbs from the Samoan archipelago. The publication is supplemented with chapters dedicated to tattooing, languages, cultures, and societies of Polynesia. Thus, the third volume concludes the publication of that part of Černý's literary legacy that deals with the cultures, societies, and languages of Oceania.
