All the stories included in this anthology relate to the fateful year of 1947 and the immediate years that followed. Freed India was then divided into two new states – India and Pakistan. Under pressure from religiously fanaticized crowds, 7.226 million Muslims were expelled from India and 7.249 million Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan. The texts do not delve into ancient history or political backgrounds. They depict the suffering and, above all, the psychological and social impacts on people who had to leave their homes and settle in a neighboring country that did not always welcome them favorably.
