Beschreibung
The anthology White Phantoms on the Waves is the first opportunity for Czech readers to become more acquainted with Finnish poetry. In a historical perspective, it presents the works of the most significant poets from the mid-16th century, marking the beginning of Finnish written culture, up to the 1980s. The individual texts illustrate how and when Finnish lyricism responded to European literary movements and trends, and how it reflected domestic tradition, particularly the rich heritage of folk literature, during various periods. Many of the 74 canonical Finnish authors represented in the anthology speak in Czech for the very first time. The selection of texts and their Czech translations were prepared by a team of Finnish scholars led by editor Michal Švec from the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, who also provided a literary-historical introduction dedicated to the development of Finnish lyricism. The book is supplemented by a bibliography of Czech translations of Finnish poetry published in print up to 2020.
