How was secondary education conceived and what problems did it have to deal with in the multicultural conditions of the first Czechoslovak Republic? In response to the central question of the study, the author understands schools not only as educational institutions but as a complex cultural system. He attempts to penetrate this system based on targeted probes into the topics of language education and history. This is not an encyclopedic view of education in the First Republic, but a cultural-historical study of the mutual intertwining and alienation in the key area of national confrontation. Inspired by the so-called 'histoire croisée', the author examines the relationships between state authorities on one side and representatives of linguistically diverse schools on the other. The process of negotiation, the search for common goals, and the strategies for asserting one's own national demands come to the forefront. Through his multilayered analysis of the educational issues, the author vividly presents the complexity of the national question in Czechoslovakia, seeks the integrative potential of state policy towards individual nationalities, and reflects on the consequences of the educational process in individual national discourses.
