The authors of the book Body 2.1: Pain in the Transformations of Time and Cultures set out to explore various forms of pain. Through numerous examples, the authors demonstrate on a rich historical, ethnographic, and anthropological material that pain is a malleable cultural phenomenon, as it has been and remains perceived, utilized, granted, or rejected in different cultures. They introduce diverse forms of punishment and torture, but also show that pain has been part of initiation rituals, and they examine whether pain must necessarily be a part of human birth. They also take us among the supporters of modern primitivism and into the BDSM community, who have a positive approach to pain. The book loosely follows the previous titles Body (2014) and Body 2.0 (2017).
