Beschreibung
The book Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe and the Year 1918: Social and International Contexts continues a series of publications from the Young Slavists Conference project associated with the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. Eleven texts from participants of the fourteenth conference edition from seven countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine) are divided into three sections (Language, Literature, History and Culture). The linguistically (Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Polish, Russian, Slovak, Ukrainian) and thematically diverse scholarly studies place the events and legacy of the year 1918 into a broader temporal and territorial framework. Regardless of the different outcomes of the processes triggered by World War I and the post-war years, the expectations of the political elites and ordinary people at that time connected a large part of the states in Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe. For some nations, the year 1918 meant the gain of their own statehood, while others gained political rights and civil liberties along with their own state, and for others, this historical period was a time of disappointed hopes. However, for all, the memory of that time remains firmly anchored in historical memory.
