Beschreibung
The book shows the impacts of colonialism on the lives of members of the New Guinean ethnic group Nungon. Based on a decade of field research and analysis of archival documents, the author discusses the transformations in the way of life of the Nungon people that began in the 1930s as a result of the first contacts with the Australian administration and Lutheran missionaries. The author does not present a simple story in the book but depicts often contradictory fragments of Nungon life, as he could hear from locals, experience with them, and glean from preserved documents. He shows how remarkably quickly their community transformed. From people unfamiliar with writing, they became Christians facing religious schism, successfully aiding in the rescue of tree kangaroos, exporting coffee to Seattle, stirring sugar into tea, preparing instant noodles, and some sharing their lives on social media... Even remote Papuan villages are part of global connections.
