The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, is fortunate in our lands to be a relatively young order, having established itself in the Alpine region only in the 19th century. Thus, they did not become, like the Jesuits, a symbol of the "dark times" of the Counter-Reformation. In the 19th century, they did compete successfully with the Jesuits for the title of the negative image of ultramontanism, which for liberals represented the peak of Catholic obscurantism; however, the historical memory of society has been merciful in their case, and today they are almost forgotten. They are mentioned at most in the context of the history of one of the largest pilgrimage sites in our country, Svatá Hora near Příbram. But precisely because their role in the Catholic environment was significant and very specific in the 19th century, yet minimally explored in the Czech lands, this book could contribute to a closer understanding of them.
