The hymns of paradise by Saint Ephrem the Syrian originated as a catechetical meditation on Adam's primordial beauty and his priestly role in paradise, where he was allowed to dwell close to its core – the mysterious presence of God. When the ancestors of humanity failed in this role after heeding the serpent's advice to audacity, they lost their paradisiacal life. God Himself took on the body of man-Adam to humble Satan and death, thus reopening the gate of paradise to the 'victors' who fought against the snares of Evil in His strength during earthly life. The twelve hymnic songs vividly describe the beauties of the paradisiacal garden, the trees and flowers, and the abodes prepared for the righteous. The poet-catechist does not consider himself worthy of being a resident of paradise, but humbly longs for at least a place on its edge. This book offers readers the first Czech translation of the collection, made from Syriac, supplemented with notes and an introductory chapter on the theology of paradise in Saint Ephrem the Syrian.
