Because Czech Comeniology and intellectual history still lack a more comprehensive monographic study on the relationship between Comenius and Bacon, the aim of this book is to bring closer the concept of reform (or rather renewal) of knowledge contained in the works of both mentioned personalities – the Czech theologian, philosopher, and educational reformer Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670) and the English philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon (1561–1626). While the first part of the book traces the paths of both thinkers to the peak form of their visions separately, the second part focuses on answering primarily those questions that connect both authors: What is the core of the knowledge reform project in Comenius and in Bacon? What is the structure and concept of their projects? Is it a project of renewal, or a vision of the progress of knowledge? How did Comenius and Bacon envision the realization of their intentions? What method did they choose for this? To what extent was Comenius influenced by Bacon? What is the link between both projects? Based on the answers to these questions, the author attempts to resolve the long-standing interpretative dispute about the nature of Comenius's relationship with Bacon in the conclusion of the book: Was Comenius a significant follower and promoter of Bacon's work?
