The authors of this collective monograph aim to highlight new dimensions in the study of expatriate issues based on field research among expatriates from Bulgaria, Serbia, the United States, Ukraine, and Croatia. The goal of the monograph is not to view expatriates through traditional approaches of integration or assimilation, but to draw attention to the transnational relationships of expatriates. The book does not seek to examine expatriate enclaves within the framework of traditional national discourse, but to expose the nationalist policies applied towards expatriates. The publication also does not overlook the orally transmitted memories of expatriates at the expense of archival records, as is often the case, but emphasizes the significance of narratives for the expatriates themselves. Furthermore, the aim of the book is not to uncritically follow the politics of identity among expatriates, but to highlight its pitfalls. Certain dimensions of research have so far been overlooked or considered insignificant. The influence came from both the tradition practiced in the Czech Republic, or rather in Czechoslovakia, and the isolation of Czech, or rather Czechoslovak, social sciences from innovative foreign approaches.
