Russia is a unique country from a religious perspective. In addition to being the largest Orthodox state in the world, it also holds primacy in other areas. In Europe, it is the country with the highest number of Muslims. Russia is also home to the only autonomous part of a European state that has a predominantly Buddhist character (Kalmykia). Before the revolution, Russia had the largest Jewish community in the world. This country is also rich in other remarkable religious phenomena. The presented publication discusses the phenomenon of Orthodoxy and its main categories (time, worship, icons, rituals), introduces the closed world of Old Believers, and provides a comprehensive overview of the main religions in today's Russia. Hanuš Nykl (1975) focuses on Russian culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is the author of studies in the fields of Russian philosophy, cultural history, and religious thought. He is engaged in translation and editorial work in his field. He lectures at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University and works at the Slavic Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
