We are not trying to outline a new theory. We are simply reading journal contributions carefully, assessing the composition of individual issues or volumes, and reflecting on the meaning and stylistic shifts of original works in the Czech context. Despite the considerable time distance, we attempt to reconstruct various levels and types of our perception as they emerged during approximately four developmental stages: 1. The founding period of the magazine from 1956 to 1963, 2. The communicative differentiation period from 1964 to 1970, 3. The normalization and virtual adjustments of the periodical from 1971 to 1989, and 4. The opinionally pluralized leadership of the bi-monthly from 1990 to 1996. We distinguish between the contemporary expectations and reader-specific interpretations of texts among so-called laypeople – the general audience, perceiving each translation as a 'Czech' text – and the contemporary expectations along with the reader-specific interpretations of texts among 'expert' perceivers – individuals professionally engaged in literature, sometimes in the role of translator, sometimes as editor, commentator, or critic. However, we also notice transitional levels and types of reception, such as hobbyist readers, who compete with their knowledge against many experts, or we pay attention to literary critics assessing the Polish text from a comparative Czech-Polish perspective.
