The publication 'Planning Socialist Science' presents an extensive historical study and a comprehensive edition of documents on Czechoslovak science during the period of so-called building socialism. It consists of an archived collection of four planning studies for the development of biological, chemical, technical, and mathematical-physical sciences, which were submitted for discussion to the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in March 1960 as a non-public (i.e., strictly confidential) material. These documents evaluated the previous development and current state of natural and technical sciences in Czechoslovakia, but primarily analyzed their future perspectives, including outlining the main tasks and proposals for measures for the following fifteen to twenty years. Although these planning studies were not officially adopted in their final form, they provide an interesting testimony to the attitudes and strategies of the creators of socialist science policy due to their comprehensive approach. Therefore, they represent a significant source for studying the history of Czechoslovak science in the second half of the 20th century. The collective study, authored by science historians D.
