Avien Helm completed rigorous training with the mozeps. For nineteen terrestrial months, he trained to become an interstellar pilot and is now taking his final exam. He looks forward to soon leaving the quarrelsome foreign star system, where four feuding civilizations intermingle. Three of them follow the primordial memes of the megal, but there exists a plethora of irreconcilably different interpretations of them. Their followers only agree in their disdain for the fourth local culture, which is genetically related to Earthlings and does not accept the teachings of the megal as the only possible worldview. ***** Mutual animosity will escalate when the mozeps faction "Too Long" plots an assassination. They will use a forbidden weapon and blind a portion of the pilot exam candidates. The blackened eyes of the affected eerily resemble the crust of a dark star, near which an ambush took place. ***** Avien had both luck and misfortune. His interstellar flight to the Solar System is indefinitely postponed, leaving him stranded far from home, and on the damned wrong side of the conflict – in the mozeps army, torn by a power struggle and a revolt against the treaty made with Earth.
