Beschreibung
The cult Romanian novel from 1929 poetically depicts the period of the end of the old times before World War I in Bucharest, that is, 'at the gates of the Orient, where everything is taken lightly.' The Kings of the Old Court are a disparate quartet of companions who meet primarily at night and indulge in imaginary journeys, visits to suburban pubs, and descents into the darkest depths of Bucharest society. Mateiu Ion Caragiale honed his only novel for many years, merging the poetics of European decadence with influences from Levantine-Balkan culture. In 2000, the Kings of the Old Court were voted the most significant Romanian novel of the 20th century in a poll conducted by the magazine Observator cultural, which involved over a hundred Romanian literary critics.
