Beschreibung
The novel Fish and Dragons catapulted Lithuanian writer Undine Radzevičiūtė to the heights of world literature. In it, the author intertwines two disparate worlds, with the very title symbolically referencing Christian Europe and ancient China. The first line of the story has the nature of a historical novel, with the central character being the real historical figure of painter Giuseppo Castiglione, a Jesuit missionary at the Chinese imperial court. The second, contemporary line resembles a fictional sitcom script, and readers are irresistibly reminded of artificial laughter in its punchlines. The two alternating lines create a dialogue between both cultures and an unrelenting tension. So much so that reading the book is practically unstoppable. This is evidenced by its international success and translations into many world languages.
