Beschreibung
The public engagement of writers has historically often heralded the rise of groundbreaking social changes. The role of the writer as an intellectual capable of capturing the social climate of the time is hard to replace: they can capture history, predict the future, touch the invisible, entertain and educate at the same time, and serve as a litmus test for social conditions. A group of six writers from six European countries reflects in this book on what has replaced the dispute between liberal democracy and communism after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Together with them, we seek answers to questions about how the crisis of Western civilization manifests itself and what caused it, where the United States, the European Union, and Central Europe fit today in the debate over liberal democracy, and we are also curious whether our region might once again find itself under the control of an authoritarian power. We seek answers to questions that do not have simple answers, yet a perspective is offered here that is different from the usual declamations of politicians. Authors: Bunda Martyna, Dückers Tanja, Horváth Viktor, Hůlová Petra, Kruk Halyna, Salmela Alexandra.
