How close can we be to the people we love? A photographer observes his adopted son, with both interest and distance, his wife sees that look, and that could ruin everything. The old man recalls a trip to Nantucket Island, the last shared journey with friends, and to a house that is still only roughly built, drawing words into the air. The woman recounts a day by the lake, an accident, and perhaps even a great love. A child burns something for the first time in life that has been important to him for a long time. Judith Hermann's characters are sometimes completely defenseless. The intensity of their encounters with others, loved ones or strangers, is heightened. These moments occur involuntarily, without excitement, and beneath the surface evoke existential weight. Judith Hermann uses few words, but between them, ungraspable things unfold.
