Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that slowly and very inconspicuously changes the nature of its host. It slows their reactions, shifts their perceptions, and causes them to behave irrationally, actually against their own interests. The young heroines of Ivana Dobrakov's prose seem to be infected with toxoplasmosis. They are sensitive and exceedingly vulnerable. The life events they experience—cohabitation with the man of their dreams, pregnancy, motherhood—do not bring them the expected grounding but rather disorient them and destroy them. The irritability of the author's approach lies in the fact that this 'sick' reality is presented to the reader as the starting point and the norm. And because she uses a language distorted by toxo grammar, she succeeds in creating a complex toxo fiction, whose undercurrents draw you into the dark realm of instincts.
