Beschreibung
Džehenem – the author chose the Turkish word for hell as the title of his book. In six separate yet variously interconnected stories, he explores the fates of people who have decided to live their lives in a foreign country. Čater, now one of the most significant writers of the middle generation in the region of former Yugoslavia, places these immigrants in his native Slovenia, but in an interview about the book, he adds in one breath: "Being a foreigner is a universal position; it is no different here. I did not intend to portray Slovenia as hell for immigrants. I wanted to write about the contact between different cultures, but also about the touch of the rural and the urban, or simply put, about the meeting of aliens with earthlings." The appeal of these stories lies in the magic of intertwining the universal with the unique. Banale themes that can touch each of us are suddenly illuminated from an unexpected angle, and Dušan Čater knows how to masterfully utilize that.
