In the continuation of the book "Hunting in Šumava," you will again find captivating stories from foresters and hunters, whose tales reveal how time passed in the northern and southern parts of Czech Šumava. Here in Srní, the first snow fell in November 1993. It wasn't as much as in previous years, just 35 centimeters. Everyone in the area preferred to stay home and not venture out much. During my musings and occasional glances out the window into the garden, I noticed that a rather good stag was coming to nibble on the junipers right under my windows. When the stag appeared near my cottage for the umpteenth time, I thought to myself, "Boy, that stag is just begging to be shot..." And as I looked around the garden, which at that time was not fenced, I saw that my chosen stag was once again walking towards us! I turned around like a top and dashed back into the house. I grabbed my rifle, stuffed a few rounds into my pockets, and ran back quickly. While running, I also loaded the rifle. I didn't waste time on anything and shot at the stag with my free hand, which could have been at the traditional distance of 70 meters. I marked the hit, but it soon disappeared into the nearby thicket of the forest...
