After Nazi Germany established the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, which became part of Hitler's Greater German Reich, twenty-six-year-old Czechoslovak pilot fled his homeland at the first opportunity. He first traveled to Poland, then escaped to France, and from there eventually made it to Great Britain, where he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve. Augustin Přeučil seemed to be just like many men who arrived in Britain to continue the fight against Hitler. He settled there and even got married. On September 18, 1941, he was declared missing during a training flight off the coast of Sunderland and Hartlepool. It was believed that he had perished. His body was never found, and nothing more was known about him. His young wife was granted a war widow's pension; he himself became just another sad statistic of the war. However, Augustin Přeučil was not dead. After landing with a 'stolen' Hurricane near Bastogne in Belgium, he was considered a downed Allied pilot by the locals, hidden, and handed over to a local resistance group. In return for their trust, Přeučil betrayed them by turning himself in to the Gestapo and revealing everything he knew. The Gestapo's response was swift and brutal. For Přeučil, it marked the beginning of a new career...
