Either way, the story of Konrad Morgen, an SS judge, is almost unbelievable. In the autumn of 1943, he visited the Auschwitz concentration camp to investigate the origin of a seized package sent from the camp containing gold. During the investigation, he discovered that the camp guards and apparently the camp leadership were involved in extensive theft and corruption. Furthermore, he also uncovered that prisoners were being killed without the approval of the SS leadership. At a time when millions of Jews were being exterminated under the Final Solution, Konrad Morgen set out to gather evidence of these 'illegal murders.' He also visited other concentration camps, such as Buchenwald, and later succeeded in bringing charges and imprisoning the camp commander Karl Koch and his sadistic wife Ilse. The SS court found Koch guilty and sentenced him to death. The seemingly fearless judge attempted to bring other Nazi criminals to justice, including the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss. He even claimed to have tried to achieve the prosecution of Adolf Eichmann, who was responsible for the mass deportations of Jews...
