Beschreibung
Their warm, polished house represents an incredible contrast to the place where I stay, where I continue to sleep. I can't believe that our worlds are separated by barely a few meters of barbed wire. I can't forgive fate for sending me to the wrong side. After all, I can't understand so many things. Just the fact that her husband, an extraordinarily brutal SS man, who comes home with boots stained with human blood, plays with the children and hugs his wife... The worst thing I have to do is clean his high boots. Caked with mud, they always smell of death, they bear her traces, that they are also his weapons. I see in my mind how he kicks my fellow prisoners, I've seen it so many times. His rage and kicks have killed more than one of us. And now I carefully cream and polish those disgusting boots. I dip my hand into them and hold them between my knees. I feel like throwing up. The scent of the cream mixes with the smell of leather, and I realize that if I manage to survive this hell, I will never, truly never clean boots again. Ann, the SS man's wife, who has just moved to Auschwitz, initially does not feel well in her new home. She is frightened because she has never seen her beloved Hans so tired.
