Beschreibung

Edek and Mala - a young political prisoner and a beautiful Jewish girl fall in love in the extermination camp Auschwitz, a place where love rarely blooms... Mala Zimetbaumová is charming, charismatic, and educated – thanks to her knowledge of several languages, she serves as an interpreter, helping her fellow inmates as much as she can. Edward Galiński, known as Edek, is also a unique personality: as one of the first Auschwitz prisoners, he witnessed the birth and growth of the extermination machinery, yet he never gives up. In 1944, the defeat of the Third Reich is imminent, but the killings in the extermination camps continue unabated. On June 24, Mala and Edek manage to escape in disguise. Edek bribes a Nazi officer, obtains an SS uniform, and together with Mala leaves the camp on a false pass. Unfortunately, their dream of freedom soon evaporates: under circumstances that remain unclear to this day, they are caught at the Polish border, but they bravely face their fate. An unjustly forgotten story, which author Francesca Paci reconstructs for the first time in all its aspects based on sources from the Auschwitz State Museum archive, period documents, and direct testimonies of survivors.
