Roza Shanina, whose memories are now reaching Czech readers, was one of the most famous Soviet snipers during World War II. She became renowned on the front lines not only for her extraordinary bravery, for which she was awarded the Order of Glory of the second and third class as one of the few Soviet female soldiers, but also for her undeniable beauty, which Soviet propaganda utilized in a large number of wartime publications that significantly influenced the young generation in supporting the war effort. The author was also an excellent sniper, credited with unofficially 75 or 76 enemy kills, and along with two other young women, was part of a group known as the Fleeing Trio. Roza was one of approximately two thousand female snipers trained by the Soviets in their training centers during the war, who were said to have shot more than eleven thousand Germans according to unofficial records. More than 250 young girls, including Roza, paid for their heroism with their lives.
