Sam Pivnik was one of the last survivors from a world that no longer exists. He was attempted to be killed fourteen times, but thanks to luck, his physical strength, and determination not to die, he endured everything and was able to tell his extraordinary life story. In 1939, when he was thirteen years old, his life was forever changed by the Nazi invasion of Poland. He survived two ghettos built in his hometown of Bedzin and months in the infamous Rampkommand in Auschwitz, where prisoners were taken either to the camp entrance or to the gas chambers. After this harrowing experience, he was sent to work in a labor camp in Fürstengrube. He could have died during the 'death march' that led him west as the Third Reich was collapsing. And he was one of the few people who swam to safety when the Royal Air Force sank the ship Cap Arcona in 1945, which at that time served as a prison. Sam Pivnik only told his life story, the true history of his survival, although it was unlikely, shortly after reaching eighty. He thus left us an incredible story of human suffering and the determination to live...
