In June 1944, the Nazis locked eighteen-year-old David Hersh in a railway cattle car and transported him to the Mauthausen concentration camp, the harshest and cruelest camp in the Reich. After ten months of grueling labor in the granite quarries at the nearby Gusen camp, a subcamp of Mauthausen, he weighed less than thirty-six kilograms. He was nothing more than a pile of bones covered with skin. As the Allied forces approached, his captors included him in the so-called death march to the Gunskirchen concentration camp, fifty kilometers away. Right at the beginning of the march, when he was more dead than alive, he summoned his last remaining strength and escaped. Shortly after, he was recaptured, but he managed to avoid being shot by the guards. After several days, he was put on another death march, but David achieved the impossible - he escaped again. He was close to death many times, yet he did not die in the concentration camps or during the death marches. In both cases, he managed to escape. Once it was unheard of, the second time it was essentially impossible...
