At the beginning of 2017, when the country was also hit by a wave of critical food shortages, surgeon Tomáš Šebek set out on a mission with Doctors Without Borders to areas where infectious and tropical diseases thrive. After experiences in trauma surgery from the cradle of voodoo in Haiti and war medicine in northern Afghanistan, he and his colleagues found themselves in an environment where a traditional healer and his alternative approach to patients have far greater respect than a doctor educated in the West.
