The eleventh volume, which is divided into two parts, fills the last gap in the chronological series of the Great History of the Lands of the Czech Crown and is defined by both the beginning of the wars with revolutionary and Napoleonic France and the definitive establishment of a constitutional monarchy within the Habsburg monarchy. Between 1792 and 1860, modern national consciousness was formed in the Czech lands, and a distinct culture emerged not only in Czech but also in German. At the same time, the foundations of a modern legal state, civil society, and market economy were laid, closely linked to the onset of industrial, communication, and intellectual revolutions. A team of prominent Czech historians presents the reading public with a new comprehensive treatment of our history, the complete account of which is still lacking for the Czech nation. This monumental, the very first Czech history of such scope is published in eighteen volumes. Although the authors have the highest professional ambitions, they primarily address a broader readership, for whom the work will serve as a reliable source of knowledge about our history as well as a reflection of the current level of Czech historiography.
