When Jorge showed up that night saying someone had taken out Julio, everyone thought he was taking the piss. But he wasn’t. It was one hell of a fucked-up move, and a few of our guys got killed in it while others lost their lives too. I could have been dead as well. But I’m not. It was like a fucked-up leap onto a vine we hadn’t had time to strap to our leg. When I think about it now, I feel as if it all happened to someone else. Maybe the whole thing will sound like something pulled out of someone’s arse, but something like that can only happen here, in this hole in the world where things happen in ways that leave you with nothing to do but shake your head. But don’t expect any miracles. People still think we can levitate a little above the ground on demand and that we are routinely born with a pig’s tail shoved up our arses. But they are fucking wrong. The stuff about the tails simply isn’t true.
