The first training methods that Simon Prins, as a trainer of service dogs for the Dutch police, adopted were based on dominance and punishment, as was customary in dog training at the time. This approach did not suit him well, so he began to search for ways to train using more positive methods. When a few years later he was tasked with training a special unit of dogs that were to operate independently and out of the handler's sight, it quickly became clear that traditional methods were insufficient for such a task, and Simon Prins had the opportunity to introduce operant conditioning into the world of service dog training. Over the course of his 30-year professional career, he has trained hundreds of service dogs and dozens of their trainers around the world using this method – and his training protocols. His graduates include rescue dogs, detection dogs, and camera dogs, which receive commands remotely via radio.
