The first attempts at mass murder using mobile gas chambers were carried out by the Nazis in 1939. Initially, mentally and physically disabled Germans and Austrians died, and in the midst of the war, entire camps of Soviet prisoners and civilians were exterminated. Gas vans became the pinnacle of mobility and efficiency of the Nazi extermination system. Hundreds of thousands of people were murdered in Polish Chelmno, Belarusian Mały Trostiniec, or Serbian Belgrade, without a murderer’s hand ever having to touch them. Organized death did not spare the children of Lidice, thousands of Czechoslovak Jews, or hundreds of patients from the psychiatric hospital in Dobřany near Plzeň. The perverse creativity of the technologists of the Final Solution fascinates with its simplicity and cold-blooded efficiency. Many of the crimes committed only fully revealed themselves decades later, during trials of captured perpetrators, who all too often escaped deserved punishment.
