This Czech-language book presents the author’s view that Alzheimer’s is not a disease like tuberculosis or cancer, but rather a phantom created to spread fear, generate profits from the sale of excessively expensive ineffective medicines, and turn healthy people into patients without a proven diagnosis. Dementia is not necessarily an unavoidable fate: symptoms of mental decline may have various causes, many of which can be treated or prevented, provided they are not diagnosed as Alzheimer’s. The author, a German biologist and health writer known for her work in Stern, Die Zeit, Spiegel and the Financial Times, describes the alleged disease as a fundamental fraud built on shaky foundations. She argues that patients labelled with Alzheimer’s take medicines whose effectiveness has not been objectively demonstrated, while many so-called Alzheimer’s syndromes are actually caused by depression, high blood pressure, unsuitable nutrition, blocked blood vessels or the side effects of various treatment combinations.
