A romantic love story set in the English aristocracy. The author narrates it in the historical context of the last quarter of the 18th century. Handsome, dashing heir to the dukedom, Lord Roland Northbridge Wilde – known to friends as North – returns to England after two years of war, having left after his fiancée Diana Belgrave abandoned him, and discovers that his reputation among people is quite tarnished: the social elite claims he is too unruly to marry. Diana never intended to tarnish North's name, but when she hastily accepted a position as a governess at Lindow Castle to save a helpless child, she had no time to consider the consequences of her decision. Everyone draws the worst possible conclusions about the child's father, leaving Diana with a bittersweet sense of regret. When North makes it clear that he still wants Diana, whether it causes a scandal or not, it takes almost superhuman effort for Diana not to give her heart to the man she still does not intend to marry. However, North, as a stubborn fighter, is determined to win. He is willing to risk everything for Diana to belong to him.
