The book, whose French title is The Invasion of the Sea, tells the story of Captain Hardigan, who, along with French soldiers stationed in Tunis, accompanies engineer Schaller on his exploration of the abandoned works of Captain Roudaire. Engineer Schaller plans to revive Roudaire's scheme to create a 'sea' in the middle of the Sahara. The project involved digging a 145 km long canal that would bring the waters of the Mediterranean Sea to those areas of the Sahara that lie below its level. This would create a lake covering an area of 8,000 km2, serving transportation, irrigation, and military purposes for the benefit of French colonial forces. The Sahara Sea Company invested significant resources in the excavation of the canal system, including newly invented machines, but encountered stiff resistance from the indigenous Tuaregs. Under the leadership of their chief Hajdar, who recently escaped from French captivity, the Tuaregs ambush and capture engineer Schaller's expedition. The members manage to escape, but they are pursued by the Tuaregs...
