The Aegean Sea was not only a place of beautiful islands at the beginning of the 19th century, but also a harbor for many pirate ships.

The novel is set during the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire from 1821 to 1829. During this time, a young French naval officer, Henry d'Albaret, who stands with the Greeks, falls in love with the enchanting Hadjine, the daughter of the Greek banker Elizundo from the island of Corfu. The two young people soon become engaged and prepare for their wedding. However, Hadjine is also desired by the sailor Nicolas Starkos, who is known to be in contact with local pirates. Their leader is the mysterious and cruel Sacratif, an ally of the Turks and a slave trader who sells his own countrymen into slavery in the ports of North Africa. Starkos knows that banker Elizundo is involved in Sacratif's slave trading and wants to gain his wealth through marriage to Hadjine.

Henry d'Albaret is tasked with freeing the Archipelago from the cruel pirate Sacratif. Whether he succeeds in this difficult task and which of the suitors ultimately wins the hand of the beautiful Hadjine will be revealed to the reader at the end of this novel.
