This Czech-language children’s book tells the story of a family of fireflies whose task is to shine for people at night. First published in 1876, it has appeared in more than one hundred editions and has inspired many artists, especially Jiří Trnka, as well as several film adaptations. The central character is a mischievous little firefly who insists on doing things his own way and disobeys his parents and Aunt Janinka, often suffering the consequences. Jan Karafiát’s fireflies are an allegorical portrayal of a family living according to Christian values and in harmony with nature.
