Beschreibung
Science is an unmistakable part of modern life: significant and powerful, but also mysterious and closed to all but a limited circle of researchers. This Czech-language book explores how these “conquerors of the unknown” live, what they value, what delights them and what troubles them enough to comment on it. Its selection, classification and arrangement of statements by famous and unknown scientists and writers, accompanied by occasional notes and references, offers a unique walk through the world of the natural sciences. It presents both the visible outer world of experiments, discoveries, publications, applications, fame and money, and the hidden inner world of imagination, ethics, beauty, God, prejudice, pseudoscience and the sadness of knowledge. The quotations are not offered as dogma, but as an inspiration for reflection and the development of personal ideas. The book concludes with thoughts on understanding other people’s ideas and having ideas of one’s own by the Czech philosopher Albína Dratvová.
