Beschreibung
In this Czech-language book, John Welwood brings together the results of his lifelong search for a connection between Eastern spiritual traditions and Western psychology. He argues that human nature has three fundamental dimensions that need to be understood as a whole: the transpersonal, or spiritual; the personal, or psychological; and the interpersonal, or relational. Eastern spiritual traditions traditionally focus on the timeless aspect of being, while Western psychology examines primarily the personal and interpersonal realms. Welwood draws on his own journey, from studying conventional academic psychology and encountering Zen and Tibetan Buddhism to realizing that meditation alone cannot provide complete healing and growth. Spiritual practice opened up a new perception of reality for him, but also revealed that it could not resolve every personal and relational problem. Psychotherapy, by contrast, enabled him to recognize hidden patterns of behaviour and work through them in an integrated way. He gradually concluded that psychology and spiritual practice need each other: psychology helps identify and heal unconscious structures of the ego, while spirituality makes their transcendence possible. Welwood therefore proposes a synthesis of both approaches, an awakening psychology that explores how spiritual awareness affects psychological life and how psychological work can support spiritual growth. The aim is neither to psychologize Buddhism nor to spiritualize psychology, but to show how the two complement each other. The result is an invitation to understand human existence as an integrated whole, connecting body, heart, mind and spirit in a living, compassionate unity.
