In this book, Norwegian professor Glenn Diesen presents what he describes as a fact-based view of the war in Ukraine, one that sharply contradicts the claims made about the conflict by most Western politicians, officials, military figures, activists and sympathetic media. He argues that the war did not begin as an unprovoked act of Russian aggression driven by Vladimir Putin’s desire to restore the Soviet Union and control Central Europe, but was provoked by an aggressive policy pursued by the United States. Diesen argues that Washington has long sought to weaken any power it regards as a threat to its global dominance. He places these events within the broader historical context of the transition from American liberal hegemony to a multipolar world order. The opening chapters examine the concept of international order and show how it has changed over the centuries, drawing on the school of political realism, which sees the distribution of power as the defining feature of international order. Power may be dispersed among many players, as in ancient Greece among Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes and others, or concentrated in the hands of one, as in the Roman Empire. Each model has advantages and disadvantages, and the balance between them has shifted throughout history. The book presents the current period as a transition from a centralised system of American hegemony to one with several centres of power, including the United States, China, India, Russia and Brazil, known as multipolarity.
