Jiří Gruša's interviews from the times of dissent to late reflections on contemporary challenges in Europe (and the Czech Republic at one of its centers) culminate in a surprisingly lively stream. The positions are often formulated poetically in the face of the changing personalities of the interviewers and, of course, memories and current situations: the power-divided Europe of the Cold War gradually seeks a new identity after 1989, and Gruša, as an ambassador in Germany and Austria, actively co-shapes the language of this new identity (metaphors of disputes over the Czech-German declaration, decrees, or Temelín). In originally Czech, German, and English interviews, which we present in a comprehensive collection for the first time, Gruša emerges as a unique author and diplomat.
