In Difficult Memories, Italo Calvino depicts the transformation of Italian society and the relationships between generations – between fathers as "farmers" and uprooted sons. He recalls key moments that shaped his future life choices: the declaration of war, the brutal annexation of the French Menton, and his first experience with the chaos of war. Although the narrative often carries signs of bitterness and disillusionment in the departure from the old world, his stories also possess a comedic quality and further confirm Calvino's narrative mastery.
