In the famous book by Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, Marco Polo tells Kublai Khan about cities named after exotic female names; he narrates places he has visited as well as imaginary ones that are not on any map. With precisely measured words, he describes landscapes and cities, their signs and shapes, towers, bridges, houses, and streets that feel familiar to us, as if they materialize our experiences, knowledge, and dreams. In Marco's telling, all cities are variations of the same model – his native Venice. Their forms are limitless, capable of having as many different faces as life itself has in its duration, demise, and eternal renewal. Calvino breaks down the idea of the original city into eleven motifs, which he combines and incorporates into a complex structure meant to reflect the layout of the labyrinth of the contemporary world.
