Beschreibung
What role do rules play in human life? One might say not much, and rather annoyingly: spelling rules, rules of polite behavior, or tax laws seem to bother us more than anything else. Therefore, it may surprise some that philosopher Immanuel Kant saw the uniqueness of the human species precisely in our ability to set rules and laws for ourselves. Some philosophers today still subscribe to Kant's idea and see humans primarily as normative beings, that is, beings governed by rules. Many of them even believe that a certain kind of rules underlies our language and our human way of thinking. At this point, contemporary philosophy intersects with contemporary science, specifically evolutionary theory, which addresses the problem of how a being as intensely cooperative and social as humans could have emerged.
