Diabetes in children and adolescents has traditionally been seen as an obstacle to greater sports activity. The dramatic improvement in the quality of life for type 1 diabetics – due to new technical and pharmacological options in insulin therapy – allows many of them to live lives almost comparable to their healthy peers. As a result, sports, including competitive participation, naturally becomes an interest among type 1 diabetics. Today, a diabetologist must be able to care for an actively sporting diabetic. The risk of hypoglycemia and other dangers associated with sports cannot be underestimated; on the other hand, the doctor finds himself in an uncomfortable position when he forbids a young patient from participating in sports, especially when the patient knows other diabetics who can engage in sports, sometimes even at a high level.
The third edition of this successful publication includes the latest methods for treatment and glycemic control, namely the application of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). The book, authored by a team led by one of the most respected Czech experts in the field of diabetology and nutrition, Prof. MUDr. Zdeněk Rušavý, Ph.D., is designed as a practical guide for diabetologists or attending physicians caring for sporting type 1 diabetics.
