Systemic scleroderma (synonym: progressive systemic sclerosis) is a serious chronic connective tissue disease affecting the skin, musculoskeletal system, and some internal organs (digestive tract, lungs, heart, and others). It is characterized by fibrotic sclerosis of peripheral and visceral vessels, fibroproductive changes in connective tissues, changes in microvascularization, and disorders of humoral and cellular immunity. It affects women 3 to 8 times more often than men. The prognosis for patients has improved in recent years, especially with the arrival of entirely new effective drugs targeting the pathogenesis of the disease. However, the success of treatment is also conditioned by early and accurate diagnosis, which includes endoscopic examination of the digestive tract.
